The next big trend in health care employment is likely to be the use of nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) in locum tenens. With the shortage of doctors worsening — the shortfall is projected to be 159,000 in 2025 — clinics and hospitals will be forced into a sort of triage of levels of care. The most complex cases will be handled by full licensed physicians, while NPs and PAs will take on the routine types of medical issues that make up the bulk of what brings patients in to the doctor. Even now, says Kurt Mosley , a business development VP at a leading physician staffing firm, the demand for BPs and PAs as physician fill-ins until a permanent doctor can be hired is growing.
