Tech and healthcare jobs are tops for 2014 says U.S. News.
Widely consulted for its top 100 lists, the publication recently announced its “100 Best Jobs,” and at the very top was software developer. It’s the first time a tech job ranked #1. It earned the vaunted position based on multiple factors, not the least of which is salary and job growth over the next several years.
U.S. News also took into account work/life balance, stress and employment rate, which, in the case of most tech jobs, is well below the current national unemployment rate of 6.6%. In fact, so few tech professionals are involuntarily unemployed that the profession might as well be thought of as having full employment.
Wanted Analytics says software “was the most in-demand occupation of the ‘best tech jobs’ and across all IT positions, with about 118,000 job listings appearing online in January 2014.” Yet it wasn’t the most difficult to fill, at least not when compared to such tech specialties as web developer and information security analyst.
The U.S. News list ranked web developer ninth and IT security analyst 11th, undoubtedly due to the more stressful task these security professionals have of staying, as U.S. News put it, “one step ahead of cyberattackers.”
Of all the tech jobs making the list, security analysts had the fewest job posting online in January. Yet filling the job is as challenging as hiring a web developer. That’s because there are far fewer skilled security techs, and, in many cases, the jobs are filled by referrals and sourcing, not advertising.
Besides the heavy representation of tech jobs at the top of the list, healthcare jobs accounted for nearly 40% of all the occupations in the top 100. Among the top 10 jobs are:
